IMA President Dr. K.K. Aggarwal said, “TMJ is a ball-and-socket joint that can get damaged due to various reasons. During stress, people often clench their jaws or grind their teeth in anger. Because of this, the muscles get tense. condition and the joint does not get rest. This can lead to swelling, pain and dysfunction in the joint.”

Dr. Aggarwal said, “When such a person opens his mouth or chews something, then there is a clicking sound due to TMJ disorder. If this sound is not accompanied by pain or discomfort in opening the mouth, then Treatment is not necessary. TMJ disease can be reduced to a great extent with some home remedies and by reducing stress and relaxation techniques.

He said that the symptoms of TMJ disorder include pain in the jaw, pulling around the ears and cheeks, fatigue, toothache, headache and clicking sound while yawning.

Dr. Aggarwal explained, “There are many other conditions that cause TMJ disorder-like symptoms. These include toothache, sinus problems, arthritis or gum disease. A dentist can find out through careful patient interactions and certain tests. Can determine what is the real cause of this problem. Treatment of TMJ disorder is possible by taking some precautions and with the help of injections and surgery etc.”

Some home remedies for these disorders:

* Over-the-counter medicines: Medicines such as naproxen or ibuprofen provide relief from muscle pain and swelling.

* Ice pack: Applying an ice pack on the face and temple for about 10 minutes can help.

* Eat soft foods: Yogurt, boiled potatoes, cottage cheese, soup, egg curry, fish, fruits and vegetables, beans are good choices.

* Do not move the jaw too much: Do not chew anything or yawn. Avoid any activity that makes you open your mouth more.

* Sitting Position: To reduce neck and face pain, sit properly.

* Relax: Techniques like yoga and meditation reduce stress and provide relaxation.
